Ultimatums and twisted histories fail to deliver results

In December 2021, the Kremlin issued a set of ultimatums masquerading as demands for ‘security guarantees’. This was not a genuine plea for security, but a strategic attempt to deny Ukraine’s agency and sovereignty on the world stage. By attempting to dictate Ukraine’s foreign policy choices, Russia sought to reassert control over its neighbour and legitimise its decades-long interference in Ukraine’s internal affairs. These ultimatums served as a fabricated pretext for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine just two months later.

For over a decade now, Putin has repeatedly distorted history to claim that Ukraine was a creation of the Bolsheviks, ignoring centuries of Ukrainian culture and statehood. This deliberate manipulation aims to delegitimise Ukraine and rationalise Russia’s aggressive actions.

Creeping attempt to redraw borders

Russia flagrantly violated the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on security assurances where it pledged to respect Ukraine’s borders and sovereignty. The illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the orchestration of sham referendums in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine are clear breaches of international law. These actions are accompanied by relentless war propaganda falsely portraying Ukraine as a puppet state controlled by foreign powers.

The narrative of ‘lost sovereignty’ extends beyond Ukraine. The Kremlin employs it to undermine other neighbouring nations, suggesting they too lack true independence and are mere vassals of the West. This strategy aims to expand Russia’s influence and reassert its dominance over former Soviet territories and beyond.

Ukraine stands firm

Yet, Ukraine still stands. The resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people and their leadership underscore their unwavering commitment to their nation’s sovereignty and identity. Their courage exposes the Kremlin’s disinformation for what it is—a tool of aggression and imperial ambition.

The Kremlin’s denial of Ukrainian sovereignty is a dangerous disinformation narrative designed to justify the unjustifiable – an unwarranted aggression that has unleashed unspeakable horrors. Thus, the international community must not be deceived by the Kremlin’s manipulations. Defending Ukraine’s sovereignty is critical—not only for Ukraine but for safeguarding international law and the universal right to self-determination against foreign coercion.

Don’t be deceived. Stand with Ukraine’s sovereignty.
