A tankie is originally a British communist, a jingoist, who believed in the Kremlin line and agreed with sending Soviet tanks to Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968. Hence, “tankie”. In the 2000s, tankie became internet slang and a political slur for - often Western - communists and supporters of militaristic anti-capitalist extreme Left. Not sharknado but Sharknafo. In June 2023, a Russian tourist was eaten alive by a shark off a beach at an Egyptian resort in Hurghada. Fellas made many shark memes, and during the first NAFO Summit in Lithuania, a plastic shark was visible on stage. It angered some Navalny supporters, but fellas answered the fella way. Sharks have since then become part of fella folklore. |

Horseshoe theory |
Russia has for years fostered close ties to various extreme right movements and has its own neo-Nazi groups. Russia has served as a meeting point for extreme right populists. For example, in 2015, representatives of several European parties participated in the "International Russian Conservative Forum". Extreme left, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be able to let go of its old illusions of Russia as an anti-imperialist power.
