The Illusion of Organic Content
In 2022, researchers from New York University and Oxford University analyzed a decade’s worth of Reddit data to understand how social media algorithms can be exploited by coordinated inauthentic behavior (CIB)—a method where groups intentionally manipulate ranking systems to amplify certain narratives or suppress dissent.
Their findings reveal how recommendation algorithms play a crucial role in whether manipulated content gains traction or fades into obscurity.
What Is Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior (CIB)?
Coordinated inauthentic behavior refers to organized efforts designed to influence online discussions by artificially boosting or suppressing content.
This behavior is not merely an occasional occurrence but a structured and strategic effort that can influence what users perceive as popular or credible information.
The study identifies two major forms of manipulation: brigading and influence operations.
Brigading occurs when groups of users from one subreddit flood another to upvote or downvote content, altering its visibility and, in some cases, suppressing dissenting voices.
This technique is particularly effective because Reddit’s voting system is designed to prioritize engagement.
By coordinating their actions, brigading groups can force certain narratives to appear more popular or bury alternative viewpoints.
“These tactics distort the natural flow of discussion, giving certain narratives undue prominence while effectively silencing alternative perspectives.”
Influence operations, on the other hand, involve networks of fake or semi-fake accounts that repeatedly push the same message across multiple threads and subreddits.
Unlike brigading, which relies on real users, influence operations often use automated scripts or bot networks to simulate organic engagement.
This method creates the illusion of widespread support or consensus, leading casual users to believe that certain perspectives are more dominant than they actually are.
A Scientific Look at Reddit Manipulation
Published at the ICML 2022 Workshop on AI for Agent-Based Modelling, the study simulated Reddit’s ranking and recommendation systems using millions of posts from 2011 to 2021.
By analyzing real-world data, the researchers sought to quantify the extent to which different ranking algorithms could be exploited.
The study’s methodology involved creating a multiagent simulation model—a system that mimics user interactions on Reddit.
The goal was to examine how different ranking algorithms influence content visibility when subjected to manipulation.
Researchers tested a variety of ranking methods to determine which were most susceptible to manipulation and which offered the most resilience against CIB.
“By understanding the underlying mechanics of these recommendation systems, we can better evaluate the vulnerabilities that bad actors exploit.”
Not All Algorithms Are Equal
The study revealed that Reddit’s ranking algorithms vary significantly in their susceptibility to manipulation.
While some algorithms inadvertently encourage brigading and influence operations, others are more resistant to such interference.
One of the most vulnerable ranking systems is the Controversial algorithm, which promotes posts that receive both a high number of upvotes and downvotes.
This system is easily exploited because brigading groups can generate the necessary engagement by coordinating their votes.
“Brigading efforts disproportionately benefited from the controversial ranking system, as coordinated groups could easily generate the necessary engagement.”
In contrast, the Rising algorithm was found to be the most resistant to manipulation.
Unlike Controversial, which prioritizes polarizing content, Rising focuses on organic engagement and emergent discussions. This prevents coordinated groups from easily gaming the system.
“By prioritizing organic engagement rather than extreme reactions, the Rising algorithm significantly reduces the impact of artificial influence campaigns.”
The Top and New algorithms were found to be moderately vulnerable.
While Top rewards posts with the most upvotes within a given timeframe, this system can still be gamed by a well-organized campaign that rapidly upvotes a targeted post.
Similarly, the New algorithm, which prioritizes recency over engagement, can be exploited by quickly posting multiple manipulated messages to flood user feeds.
“Manipulative actors could still exploit these systems by timing their engagement strategies strategically.”
Meanwhile, the Best (Personalized) algorithm reinforces pre-existing biases by suggesting content based on a user’s past interactions.
While this system does not create manipulation on its own, it exacerbates echo chambers by continuously reinforcing specific viewpoints and limiting exposure to diverse perspectives.
“Filter bubbles emerge as a direct consequence, narrowing users’ exposure to diverse perspectives.”
A More Informed Reddit Experience
The ICML 2022 study provides concrete evidence that not all Reddit engagement is organic.
While most users browse Reddit assuming they are engaging with authentic opinions, the reality is that coordinated manipulation plays a significant role in what rises to the top.
Understanding how these manipulative tactics function is crucial for anyone who wants to navigate Reddit—and other social media platforms—with a more critical eye.
The algorithms designed to help users discover content can also be weaponized to spread disinformation, suppress dissenting opinions, and artificially amplify certain viewpoints.
By identifying these tactics and educating users on how they operate, we can take steps toward a more transparent and fair online environment.
Social media companies, including Reddit, have a responsibility to refine their ranking systems and implement better detection mechanisms to curb manipulative behavior.
However, the responsibility also lies with users to be discerning, to question why certain content is gaining traction, and to recognize patterns of artificial engagement.
“Users should have greater control over how content is recommended to them.”
By staying informed, questioning the content we see, and advocating for algorithmic transparency, we can collectively work toward a more balanced and trustworthy digital space.
